It has been a year since the first case of Covid epidemic was reported in the country. Although the fear of the epidemic has not completely abated, the country is making efforts to contain the disease by initiating several important preventive measures, including the distribution of vaccines.Kerala is the first place in India where Covid disease has been reported from the city of Wuhan in China to the rest of the world. On January 30, 2020, a medical student from Wuhan, Thrissur, was diagnosed with Kovid disease. In the first phase, Kerala, which had been preparing for the epidemic, prepared to set an example to the rest of the world.
Since the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of the epidemic, the state health department has begun taking preventive measures. From January 24, 2020, a control room was opened in the state to coordinate activities against the Covid epidemic.Later, Kerala witnessed the emergence of the Health Department under the leadership of Health Minister KK Shailaja, the health workers of the Covid Front, the police and the people's representatives in the local bodies.
Kerala's view was that vigilance, not fear, was needed to defend Covid. While the average population density of India was 430 per sq km, it was 860. Kerala faced many challenges in dealing with the disease. Experts predict that the death toll from Covid will be highest in Kerala, but the government and the people have worked together to reduce the death toll to a minimum. The intervention of Health Minister KK Shailaja, who coordinated and controlled these activities, was lauded by the international media. During the second phase of the Covid epidemic from March 6 to May 4, Kerala was able to contain the death toll even though the death rate was much higher than other states in India. The second phase of the Covid epidemic was in full swing, including the preparation of isolation wards in medical colleges.
When a nationwide lockdown was declared to defend Covid, the Central and State Governments and the people stood together to repatriate those trapped in other states, deliver food to the hungry and repatriate migrant workers.During the Covid period, Malayalees were trained to live with the disease by getting acquainted with and using the new key words lockdown, quarantine, isolation, mask, social distance and reverse quarantine.
Although the disease has been brought under control in many other states of India since last October, the situation in Kerala has not been so calm. The fact that the test positivity rate is more than ten on several days raises concerns. However, Kerala is relieved to be able to keep the death rate at 0.4 per cent.
